This box is used to hold money to be dedicated to God as a thank-you for the fulfillment of prayers. It was only a few hundred years ago that it became money. Originally, people offered "ohineri," wrapped in rice and other such items. With the development of the monetary economy, at some point in time, people began to place money offering boxes. The oldest money-offering box is said to have been placed at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in 1540.
