鯉は生きる力が強く、中国の言い伝えでは鯉が龍になったという伝説があるほどです。そのため、縁起の良い魚とされています。日本では男の子のこの成長を願うため、五月に鯉のモニュメントを家の外に飾る風習があります。

　Carp have a strong will to live, so much so that in Chinese lore, there is a legend that a carp turned into a dragon. For this reason, it is considered an auspicious fish. In Japan, there is a custom of decorating carp monuments outside houses in May to wish for this growth of boys.
