It was originally the residence of Echigo Takada clan of the Sakakibara family in the Edo period. In the early Meiji period, it was Yusonari Makino’s residence. After, in 1896, it became the residence of Hisaya Iwasaki (Mitsubishi 3rd president).
At that time there were as many as 20 buildings on the vast site, but now there are only three buildings: a Western style building, a billiards room and a Japanese-style building.
A Japanese-style building was used as a daily living space, and a Western-style building was used properly as a customer service space.
The billiards room of the Condor design building is connected by an underpass to the Western-style building. You can see the old Japanese-style architecture carefully made from fine materials.
After the Pacific War, it was taken over by GHQ. After they returned it, the building was used as the “Supreme Court Judicial Training Institute.” During the Great Kanto Earthquake, the site was opened to local residents as an evacuation shelter.
